5 Wines Every Man Should Own

2010 Berrys' Good Ordinary Claret, Dourthe, Bordeaux, France, £9.00

Simon Be
Berry Bros. & Rudd's best-selling wine and an all-round crowd pleaser. Produced especially for us by highly respected Bordeaux producer, Dourthe, this Merlot-dominated wine boasts an incredible purity of red and black fruits, ripe tannins and a delicious finish. Soft and silky, this is a sophisticated everyday wine which is perfect for drinking now.

Champagne Jacquesson Cuvee 736, Champagne, France, £36.95

The wine is showing very well now, its classic aromas of yeast, white flowers, crushed rock and white fruit stone rounded out on the palate by a generosity of fruit, born from natural ripeness, and complemented by hints of hazelnut and brioche. The finish, as so often with Jacquesson, is pure and satisfying.

2012 Ch. Rauzan-Segla; Margaux, Bordeaux, France, £210 per case of 6 bottles in bond

Just below Ch. Margaux and Ch. Palmer in the Margaux pecking order. This wine has an exuberant and open knit nose with redcurrant fruit and a racy floral edge combines with sappy cassis fruit and more redcurrant notes on the palate. There is a lovely spice and creamy edge from the oak with enough flesh, roundness of fruit, balance and texture to suggest this will turn out very well in bottle, perfect for future drinking.

2000 Ch. Lynch Bages, Pauillac, Bordeaux, France, £1884 per case of 12 bottles in bond

2000 is a stunning vintage and one of the best years ever for Lynch. Quintessential Claret loved by the UK market and with 97 points from world-renowned wine critic Robert Parker. Succulent, with lots of juicy black fruit and silky tannin, this is a beauty that can be drunk now or cellared. This wine is just beginning to drink well yet promises to last for another 20-25+ years.

2011 Vouvray, Le Mont Sec, Gaston Huet, Loire, France, £27.75

Le Mont gives us discreet white flower finesse, underlined by a fantastically taut, almost electric tension, and the sort of palate that won't be everybody's cup of tea, unless you're willing to wait a decade: dry, it's pure lemon pith!
