We’d have trouble picturing the world of American sports cars without the Ford F -1.50% Mustang, and to be honest there have been a few times during the Mustang’s 50-year history when we weren’t sure if it would survive. Thankfully, those times are well behind us, and the Mustang is with us once again, in nearly every flavor imaginable. If you told us 20 years ago just how many versions of the Ford Mustang would be on the market in 2013, we would have been skeptical. But we are now living in a second muscle-car and pony-car era. The Ford Mustang has been with us for 50 years, while others have just rejoined us a few years ago after decades-long absences. As the 50th anniversary of the Ford Mustang looms next year, Autoweek takes a look back at a number of important milestones in the Mustang’s history:
